My son is 15 and wants to join the Military..Isn't it to young to decide ?
My son Joshua is a Freshman this year in High School. He decided he wanted to join ROTC in school and is currently signed up throughout his High School years. He really enjoys the program and has reached several ranks from the beginning of the School Year. He is very meticulous about his uniform. All of his ribbons have to be carefully stitched, the uniform itself pressed to perfection. Daily as I go to my mailbox there are packets sent from the Marines, Army and the Navy. He is preparing for enlistment. This scares me to death ! In some branches you can sign as early at 16 with the parents signature. Others it's 17 and all require your High School Diploma. Josh has conceded several times he want's to join the Marines and wants me to sign with him at the age they allow ( I believe it's 16 ). Josh will turn 16 in July of this year and I cannot imagine giving my parental consent at such a young age.... To me a 15 or 16 year old boy...who is still a child in my eyes..cannot effectively make a decision so life changing. Once you sign, you sign..that's it. At 16 can a boy..a teenager really know what he wants? To me that is like saying I found the woman of my dreams and want to get married. Will you sign for me? Things look great, ROTC is wonderful however ROTC is a cake walk compared to actually being in the Military. Since the beginning of the school year Recruiters from several branches have come into the High School. They have educated these 15 year old on their branches and what they can offer each man. That's the thing "MAN"...I don't feel by any means my 15 year old son is a "Man". He is a teen-ager. One at this point who should be the normal teenager. A Marine Recruiter told my son " He was a Man now, and needed to make a "Manly" decision. My son's ROTC instructor who spent 30 years in the Army told my son, you are too young to make this decision. Hence...now, the battle between the Army and the Marines with what I feel my son to be the rope in this game of tug of war and come over to our side. I have pointed out several reasons why my son should wait to make a decision and ultimately informed him that as his Mother I would not sign for him. That if this is something he truly wanted to do he could make that decision and sign himself when he turns 18. I want this decision to be his and only his. If he wants to make such an adult decision than I feel he should sign like an adult to enlist in whatever branch he see's fit for him. I wonder...when is the right age to make such a decision. I wonder what is the right age for these recruiters to start recruiting teen-age boys. Is 15 and 16 to young ? Currently, this is now all my son thinks about. The Military has now become his food for thought. I am very proud that he wants to defend our country and our freedom. As a mother I am torn and scared. As a Mother I think he is to young to make this decision because I truly feel this is not one to be taken lightly.... I wonder exactly why Air Force Recruiters have not made their appearance to date. I wonder : If they have enough sense to realize these kids are simply to young to make such a profound decision ?
